Welcome to the BVC homepage.

Since September 2008 the teaching of Religious Education PSHE and Citizenship has been combined and is now known as Beliefs, Values and Citizenship.

The subject is taught by a dedicated team of teaching staff to address both spiritual and physical aspects of life.

Students in the lower school are taught in mixed ability groups and receive 2 lessons per week.  Students in the upper school are set according to ability and receive 2 lessons per week in year 10 and 1 in year 11.

Key Stage 3

Year 7 ~ students begin their time at Teign exploring what it means to be human.  This involves looking at the spiritual nature of human life, human physical development and students aspirations for the future.

Year 8 ~ students begin the Autumn term by looking at the nature of authority and the influence this has on the way we live, both in religion and society.  Students also explore what it means to be a good citizen.

Year 9 ~ the focus at the beginning of the year is on ethics and relationships. Students begin by exploring what influences the way people make moral decisions, especially involving sex and relationships.  Sex education forms part of this work.

Key Stage 4

Year 10 ~ in year 10 students study a GCSE short course in religious studies alongside elements of PSHE and Citizenship.  The short course begins with an exploration of morality which focuses on drugs, alcohol and tobacco education.

Year 11 ~ students on year 11 begin their second year of the GCSE short course by studying the religious arguments for and against abortion.

Some students choose to top up their short course to a full GCSE by studying an extra module.  This is taught on a twilight basis at present.

Key Stage 5

Year 12/13 ~ students who opt to study this subject at A Level follow the OCR philosophy and ethics modules, these include the work of philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, ethical theory and applied ethics. Students are examined by 2 exams in June of each year.
