Child Development

 

Time allocation: 3 lessons a week

Course content

There are five clear sections, each form the basis of approximately one terms work:

Parenthood  

Pregnancy  

Diet, Health and care of the Baby

Development of the Child

Support for the Parent and Child

 

Unit 1 Written examination (Assessment weighting 40%) Students answer 6/8 compulsory questions, which test knowledge and understanding in the five areas above.

Unit 2 Research Task (Assessment weighting 20% controlled) Students complete one research task from a range of set tasks on four of the areas excluding Development of the Child.

Unit 3 Child Study (Assessment weighting 40%) Students complete one Child Study. They choose one of AQA set tasks as a focus of study. The child studied will be between 0 – 5 years.

Careers, Further and Higher Education

This course would be a great foundation for students wishing to progress their studies in Child Care either at NVQ, BTEC or A level.

Possible Careers are:

  • Nursing – Children’s nurse – specialised in the nursing of children.
  • Play worker – working with children between 5-15 years old involving play to help children develop.
  • Teacher – Nursery, Primary or Secondary teaching of children.
  • Child Psychotherapist – work with children who have emotional and behavioural problems, helping them to overcome their problems.
