GRAPHIC PRODUCTS

 

Time allocation: A two year course. 3 lessons a week.

 

Examination Board: AQA

 

Syllabus & Number: GCSE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY: GRAPHIC PRODUCTS (4550)

 

Course content: A practical subject area merging both Designing and Making products using a range of graphic and modelling materials

Year 10 – building up on the core skills work from Key Stage 3

Year 11 – Controlled Assessment Task (coursework) and preparation for the written exam.

 

Assessment: Unit 1 (45501) Written paper - 2 hours – 120 marks – 40%

                   Candidates answer all questions in two sections. Pre-release material issued.

                   Unit 2 (45502) Controlled Assessment – Approximately 45 hours – 90 marks – 60%

Consists of a single design and make activity selected from a range of board set tasks undertaken in normal school time.

 

Course Skills:

Candidates will have the opportunity to build upon, and apply the knowledge, skills and understanding gained throughout Key Stage 3 in more detail. Candidates will be enthused and challenged by the range of graphic and modelling materials. They will be encouraged to learn through images to use, understand and apply colour and design, to develop spatial concepts, and to understand graphic materials and their manipulation. They will design and make product(s) using a graphic media and new technologies to prepare them for the world of work. This will include the use of CAD/CAM and hand skills. Other areas of design work will be covered to suit the needs of the individual students wherever possible.

 

In year 11 candidates will be doing their 45 hour controlled assessment task and exam preparation.

The GCSE exam consists of the following study areas:

1. Materials and Components

2. Design and Market Influences

3. Paper and card Engineering

4. Processes and Manufacture

There will be questions relating to these in the final written exam and some evidence of them will be needed in the controlled assessment task.

 

Teign School 6th Form There are no courses currently running.

 

Careers, Further and Higher Education: This GCSE course lays an appropriate foundation for further study of Design Technology at AS and A2 level in Product Design and Diplomas in Manufacturing and Product Design or Engineering at level 3.
