Course content
A practical subject area merging both Designing and Making, requiring the
application of knowledge and understanding when developing ideas, planning, producing products
and evaluating them.
Year 10 - building up on the core skills work from Key Stage 3
Year 11 – Controlled Assessment task (Coursework) and preparation for written exam.
Assessment: Unit 1 (45701) Written paper – 2 hours – 120 marks – 40%
Candidates answer all questions in two sections. Pre-release material issued.
Unit 2 (45702) Controlled Assessment – Approximately 45 hours - 90 marks – 60%
Consists of a single design and make activity selected from a range of board set tasks.
Course Skills
Candidates will build upon the work from Key Stage 3 to develop a working knowledge of textiles
materials and components appropriate to modelling, prototyping and manufacturing.
Materials and Components
Researching natural and synthetic fabrics used in fashions or soft furnishings. Gathering information through various sources, noting the advantages and disadvantages of each fabric. Design and Market Influences
Analysing products and processes by considering how Design & Technology affects the manufacturer, user and the environment, and the importance of health and safety issues. This would be the use of CAD software to create different colour ways on design and then evaluate their effects. Software packages are available to generate ideas.
Processes and Manufacture
Learning about appropriate manufacturing processes and techniques including CAD and CAM. You will need to be aware of the processes involved in manufacturing for batch and mass production.

Careers, Further and Higher Education: This GCSE course could lead into further study to AS/A2 level Design Technology Textiles. The course gives you the opportunity to follow a fashion and accessory route or a soft furnishing route and you will learn about a range of manufacturing processes, techniques and technologies. All relevant and transferable in both educational and career settings.
