Drama There is drama to be found all around us and in everything we do. Children are natural actors, and drama helps to unleash their creativity and build up their confidence.

Drama in the Curriculum

In the theatre and in the classroom drama is a way into knowledge; it opens up new ways of looking at things. Through theatrical metaphor the world we live in is explored.

Drama is a practical artistic subject. It is both a learning medium and an art form in its own right. Drama is a shared fiction through which we make sense of the world and our experiences within it.

Facilities
Drama at Teign is part of the Performing Arts Department and is located in the Performing Arts block. Drama at Teign School is taught in three purpose built spaces. The newest space is the ‘Templer Theatre’ a state of the art performance venue which opened in September 2011. The second space is the ‘Drama Hall’ a superb teaching and small scale performance space with theatre lighting, excellent digital sound equipment and multimedia facilities. The third teaching space is the ‘Dance Studio’ which is adjacent to the Drama Hall and is an ideal space for drama activities. We also have a Theatre Workshop (formally known as the annexe) which is where we make and store our sets, props, lighting equipment and highly impressive costume collection.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum
Years 7, 8 and 9 currently have one 50 minute drama lesson per week. Students follow a challenging and creative scheme of work which introduces key performance conventions and techniques whilst also developing many important transferable life skills, such as:-

  • Confidence

Extra Curricular
Teign School has a tradition of putting on high quality whole school productions (alternating between plays and musicals). We offer our students a full theatrical experience as either performers, technicians, crew or audience members. Please click on the past productions page for further information and pictures. Throughout the year students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs, theatre trips and workshops. Students are encouraged to regularly check the department notice board.
