Drama There is drama to be found all around us and in everything we do. Children are natural actors, and drama helps to unleash their creativity and build up their confidence.

Oliver!

(Teign School Production 2006)

Teign School’s 2006 Production was Oliver! (Lionel Bart’s musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens masterpiece Oliver Twist).

‘Teign School’s production of Oliver gave 80 pupils a chance to shine in the limelight.  They scintillated madly – all fourscore of them – in the well choreographed crowd scenes.  As orphans, they streamed through the auditorium, picturesque in their rags and tatters, setting toes tapping with a hearty chorus of Food, Glorious Food.  Later they became the flower girls, school girls, milk maids, washerwomen, paper sellers and sweeps who brought a Victorian street scene to life for Consider Yourself; before becoming pickpockets for a rousing version of Be Back Soon.

Individual performances also included dazzlers. Fagin (Dan Greening) who was bewitching with his understated Considering the Situation: his hands in their fingerless gloves took on a life of their own as they twitched mesmerically at the boys he was training as pickpockets.  Voice, gesture, body language all were spot on.  Harry Satloka gave us a spirited Oliver who defied all that fate threw at him.  Other promising performances came from Alex Clemence as the Dodger, Tom Bagnall as Bill Sykes and Michelle Gilpin as Bet.

Ben Campbell as Mr Bumble and Lauren Oke as Widow Corney blossomed as their confidence grew and Mr and Mrs Sowerby (Ben Moss and Atlanta Vowden) were a growing pleasure to watch and listen to.

The character of Nancy played by Rosie Erangey was vibrant and energetic, electrifying the action on stage whenever she appeared.

Clever production touches such as the interval vignette when Oliver is caught picking pockets further lifted the performance.

Highly enjoyable – like Oliver, I too wanted more.’
